Mobile Learning and the New B.C. High School Science Curriculum
"Mobile learning obviously enjoys all the benefits of traditional eLearning and along with it also provides ample scope to fully utilize the blended learning approach. In this hybrid approach, web-based online learning is added to or used as complementary to the traditional in-person or face-to-face teaching and instructional method. Since mobile phones provide the learners control over time, place, path, and pace of learning, the blended learning method works exceptionally well if mLearning is employed." Suresh Kochattil

m-Learning Lesson Template
Mobile devices are tools that can be used to augment the learning experience for students. As Kochattil points out, m-Learning shares many of the benefits of e-Learning and works well alongside traditional teaching practices in a blended learning environment. Mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones, allow students to access information in different ways giving them control over the path, pace, location and time of learning. For these reasons, a unique type of lesson plan is necessary to organize thoughts and bring together the necessary components to plan a mobile lesson.

The m-Learning lesson template fuses traditional elements of a face to face lesson plan with aspects that are required for mobile learning. Most lessons plans will include a section of goals or outcomes to be covered in a lesson. With the implementation of the new B.C. Education Plan , it was necessary to adjust this section of the template to match how the new curriculum is organized. Instead of having prescribed learning outcomes as previously, there are now two components of the Learning Standards for every course; Core Competencies and Content. Simply stated, Core Competencies are skills and methods that are to be acquired and Content is the material or information to be investigated. Because the new education plan is placing a large emphasis on Core Competencies, the goals or learning outcomes section has been updated in the m-Learning lesson template to a section of Competencies and Content.

Features of the m-Learning lesson template that strictly pertain to using mobile devices include 3 sections. The first section is a list of programs, apps and Web tools that are required for the lesson. The goal of this part of the template is to remind the teacher of all the necessary technological components of the lesson. When using technology, issues can arise. It would be wise to test the necessary tools and/ or have students download the required apps prior to the lesson so as to avoid any delays or complications.

The remaining two features of mobile learning are found on the second page of the m-Learning lesson template. The second page consists of a table that is split into two columns. The first column pertains to Quinn's Four C's of Mobile Learning. The purpose of this component of the lesson plan is to promote the different ways mobile devices can be used as a learning tool. It's not necessary that every lesson have all four components, but it serves as a reminder that smartphones and tablets are powerful devices that that can be used for collaborating, capturing, computing and creating content. The second column outlines the different learning theories that can be applied when using mobile technology. Once again, not all four theories need to be in each lesson but a variety of different types of learning will keep students engaged and active in their learning.
